Astrocytes emerge as important modulators of the hippocampal neurogenic niche. In contrast to the prevailing assumption that astrocytes are postmitotic in the non-injured adult brain, astrocytes in the adult dentate gyrus proliferate, and their proliferation capacity can be boosted by stimuli such as voluntary exercise. In my PhD thesis, I will investigate dynamics of niche astrocytes under different conditions and decipher astrogliogenesis in the murine hippocampus.
