Astrocytes of distinct brain regions can substantially differ in morphology and functional properties. In my research I want to investigate astrocyte heterogeneity within one brain region, the hippocampus, by studying their morphology and connection to other cell types and structures. The identification of astrocyte subpopulations within the hippocampal stem cell niche and the clarification of their different roles and functions might be essential to understand astropathologies and their contribution to CNS-disorders.
